Helping Young Adults Navigate Life's Challenges & Thrive

The transition to adulthood can be a complex and often overwhelming journey. For young adults, facing new responsibilities, relationships, and life decisions can trigger many emotions. At Intown Psychology, we understand the unique challenges that young adults encounter, and we're here to provide therapy and support them as they navigate this transformative phase of life.

Why Choose Therapy at Intown Psychology?

Young adulthood is a time of self-discovery, change, and growth. It's also a period when individuals often experience increased stress, emotional challenges, and essential life decisions. At Intown Psychology, our team of professionals, including Dr. Jeremy Salzman, Jess Hathorn, Dr. Steven "Steedy" Kontos III, and Grace Brown, specializes in providing therapy tailored to the unique needs of young adults.

Common Young Adult Disorders

At our Atlanta-based therapy center, we specialize in providing services to young adults facing a wide range of mental health challenges. Our dedicated team of psychologists, therapists, and counselors are well-equipped to address the following disorders and conditions:

OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder): OCD manifests in many ways. Often, a person experiences unwanted thoughts or images (the obsession), which leads to a ritual/habit (the compulsion) that temporarily relieves their anxiety. Some patients experience “just right” OCD, where they may not necessarily share the traditional obsessions, but they feel they have to engage in certain behaviors to feel “just right.” Our team understands the unique struggles associated with OCD and is here to help young adults manage their OCD by using evidence-based treatments, such as ERP (Exposure Response Prevention).

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder): ADHD is characterized by many symptoms, such as difficulties with emotional regulation, hyperactivity, inattention, focus, organization, and impulse control. Each person may encounter symptoms differently. Our therapeutic services are tailored to assist them in building practical strategies for success and strengthening their executive functioning skills.

Major Depressive Disorder: Major depressive disorder is characterized by a persistent feeling of sadness and a loss of interest. Our therapists are skilled in addressing major depressive disorder, offering support and guidance for dealing with persistent sadness, hopelessness, suicidal ideation, and other related symptoms.

Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety is an umbrella term used to describe worries, fear, or nervousness, depending on the context. Below are specific types of anxiety disorders that we treat at Intown Psychology:

  • Specific Phobias: Excessive fear or worry about a particular object or situation.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder: Excessive fear, worry, or nervousness about a variety of topics. People often experience racing thoughts, often observed before bed or in the morning.

  • Social Anxiety Disorder: Excessive fear, worry, or nervousness in one or more social situations in which you are exposed to scrutiny or criticism by others. People often report feeling like others are constantly judging them and feel like they have a spotlight following them.

  • Panic Disorder: Recurrent panic attacks. Panic attacks are abrupt surges of intense fear or discomfort that reach a peak within minutes. Symptoms include sweating, trembling/shaking, heart racing, difficulty breathing, and feeling like they are going to pass out, just to name a few.

Substance Abuse/Dependence: A substance use disorder is characterized by uncontrolled use of a substance despite negative consequences, such as interpersonal conflicts, academic or occupational difficulties, trouble with the law, etc. We provide specialized counseling for young adults grappling with substance abuse or dependence issues, assisting them in overcoming addiction and making healthier life choices

PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): PTSD is triggered following a terrifying event- either experienced or observed. Symptoms include flashbacks, avoidance of trauma reminders, anxiety, nightmares, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Young adults who have experienced distressing events can find solace and healing through our trauma-focused therapy. Our therapists are well-versed in helping young adults process their experiences and regain a sense of safety and control.

Common Issues Addressed with Young Adults

At Intown Psychology, we offer a safe and confidential space for young adults to explore a wide range of issues, including but not limited to:

Anxiety & Stress: Young adults often experience anxiety related to critical life decisions, career choices, and the complexities of relationships. The pressure to make the right choices can be overwhelming. At Intown Psychology, our experienced therapists work closely with young adults to develop effective strategies for managing anxiety and stress. We provide support to help them navigate these challenges and make informed decisions that lead to resilience and well-being.

Low mood: The challenges of young adulthood can sometimes lead to feeling down. As young adults face significant life transitions and responsibilities, it's not uncommon to experience depressive thoughts and emotions. Our therapists are here to assist young adults in addressing these feelings. We offer support, guidance, and coping strategies to help improve mood and foster growth.

Relationship Challenges: Building and maintaining healthy relationships can be a substantial challenge during young adulthood. Young adults often face complex relationship dynamics when managing family dynamics, forming romantic partnerships, or navigating friendships. Our experienced therapists provide invaluable guidance to help young adults navigate these complexities. We aim to facilitate open communication and support the development of meaningful and healthy connections in their personal and professional lives.

Life Transitions: Young adulthood is a phase marked by significant life transitions, such as moving away from home, entering college, starting a career, or adapting to new environments and responsibilities. These transitions can be daunting and unsettling. At Intown Psychology, we support young adults as they adapt to these changes and find ways to thrive amid new challenges. Our therapists help develop essential life skills and strategies to transition to the next phase of life successfully.

Identity and Self-Discovery: Young adulthood is a time for self-discovery, but it can also lead to questions about identity, values, and life goals. Our therapists assist young adults in exploring their core beliefs, values, and personal identity. We help navigate this introspective journey, fostering self-awareness and self-confidence toward a fulfilling and purposeful life.
